Abstract

Abstract
In the age of digital communication, emojis function not only as affective cues but also as socially enregistered symbols shaped by cultural context and platform affordances. However, cross-cultural work often presumes within-culture stability and overlooks platform dynamics; synchronized event-window comparisons are rare. Guided by enregisterment theory, this study offers a descriptive cross-platform analysis of Weibo and Twitter during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The objective is to quantify category- and emoji-level sentiment and to identify systematic cross-platform contrasts in polarity distributions and mean intensities. Using a corpus of over 488,000 posts, the analysis applies sentiment-polarity methods and a function-based emoji categorization to compare emotional expression patterns. Kernel density and mean comparisons reveal divergent affective styles: Weibo exhibits more direct, affect-rich emoji use, whereas Twitter shows a more restrained, metaphorical style. These contrasts are interpreted—without causal claims—as consistent with an enregisterment account in which meanings cohere through repeated use at the intersection of cultural affect norms and platform affordances. This study refines sociolinguistic understandings of digital symbols in global cross-platform communication.

Abstract
Technical English (TE) proficiency is crucial for the future careers of polytechnic students. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools offer significant potential to enhance language learning, their effectiveness relies on student acceptance and use. There is limited understanding of what drives polytechnic students to adopt these tools specifically for TE. This study aims to identify the key factors influencing polytechnic students' acceptance and use of AI tools in this context and employ a quantitative approach based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze survey data collected from 100 Polytechnic Kota Bharu (PKB) students enrolled in TE courses. The research investigates core antecedents, primarily perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEOU), and their impact on students' behavioral intention (BI) to use AI tools. The potential influence of external factors such as social influence and lecturer support are examined. The study found PEOU was identified as a critical antecedent, which significantly positively affected PU and BI. The study reaffirmed the significant predictive power of BI on AU, indicating that students' stated intentions reliably translate into their subsequent usage behaviour. This research will offer practical recommendations for educators seeking to integrate AI tools effectively into TE instruction. Theoretically, this study contributes to understanding technology adoption within the specific domain of technical and vocational language education, providing valuable insights for leveraging AI to improve essential communication skills for aspiring technical professionals.

Abstract
The recent global increase in the Muslim population, coupled with a rising demand for halal food products, has contributed to the significant expansion of the global halal food market. This trend reflects a growing consumer interest in halal -certified products. South Korea has emerged as a popular travel destination among Muslim tourists, particularly those from Malaysia. However, challenges have surfaced concerning the misuse of halal signage by street food vendors who, in some instances, offer non-Halal items. This situation has raised concerns among Malaysian Muslim travelers regarding the authenticity and reliability of halal street food in the country. This study aims to investigate the purchase intentions of Malaysian Muslim travelers toward halal street food in South Korea by employing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as the guiding theoretical framework. The variables assessed in the study include attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and consumer awareness. A total of 142 valid survey responses were collected and quantitatively analysed. The overall reliability and validity test of Cronbach’s Alpha score is 0.911, indicating excellent internal consistency. Spearman correlation analysis revealed weak yet positive correlations between the independent variables and purchase intention: attitude (0.142), subjective norms (0.137), perceived behavioral control (0.029), and consumer awareness (0.179). These findings suggest that although the correlations are modest, there is a meaningful association between the examined variables and the purchase intentions of Malaysian Muslim travelers with regard to halal street food in South Korea. The results underscore the need for a structured and reliable halal support system in South Korea. Enhancing the halal food ecosystem would assist regulatory authorities and tourism agencies in implementing effective strategies to address these concerns. Such measures would not only improve the availability and authenticity of halal street food but also foster greater confidence among Muslim travelers when making food-related decisions.

Abstract
In the post-pandemic era of global tourism, Muslim travellers are increasingly seeking experiences that are both comfortable and aligned with Islamic ideals and lifestyles. Malaysia, a premier location for Muslim tourism, is pivotal in offering Muslim-friendly hospitality services. Nonetheless, the degree of customer comprehension regarding the authentic notion of Muslim-friendly hotels remains inconsistent, which may affect their lodging booking selections. This study aimed to assess customer comprehension of Muslim-friendly hotel services, evaluate customer perceptions regarding safety, quality, and cleanliness, and identify the key factors influencing customer decisions to utilize Muslim-friendly hotel services in Selangor. This research employed a survey methodology, utilizing questionnaires for data gathering. A total of 384 respondents were chosen, although only 303 questionnaires were full and suitable for analysis. The study results indicated that most respondents have a comprehensive understanding of Muslim-friendly hotel services. Perceptions of safety factors were also elevated. Religious factors were recognized as the primary influence on customer decisions to select Muslim-friendly hotels.

Abstract
The Malaysian culinary traditions, passed down through generations, have contributed to the global recognition of MHF as a distinctive cuisine. However, the similarities between Malaysian food and that of neighbouring countries underscore the need to strengthen and preserve a culinary identity that is both idealistic and uniquely Malaysian. Nowadays, Malaysian Heritage Food facing modernization and having significant problems maintaining its authentic cultural values. This study examines the relationship between food culture, lifestyle, and tourists’ knowledge in shaping perceptions of MHF in Tioman and Perhentian Islands. Application of quantitative methodology, data sampling was collected via online survey. Random and purposive sampling method yield 351 respondents. Pearson correlation reveal that tourists’ knowledge and lifestyle have strong positive correlations towards perceptions of MHF. Whereas food culture shows a weak and insignificant relationship towards perception of MHF. These results suggest that while cultural heritage remains important, knowledge transmission and lifestyle practices play a more decisive role in sustaining MHF’s appeal. The study highlights the need for educational initiatives, culinary tourism strategies, and policy measures to strengthen the preservation and promotion of MHF in the face of globalization

Abstract
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognise, understand, regulate, and utilise emotions in oneself and in others (Mayer et al., 2004). Studies have investigated emotional intelligence (EI) in the context of foreign language learning, particularly its role in influencing motivation, anxiety, and language acquisition. The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ use of emotional intelligence in the process of learning and using English as a second language. A quantitative study was conducted to explore motivation factors for learning among undergraduates at a public university in Malaysia. A purposive sample of 84 participants responded to the survey. The instrument used a 5-Likert scale survey (ranging from 1 - strongly disagree to 5 - strongly agree) and is rooted in Schutte et al.’s (1998) instrument titled, The Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT), which was modified into the Emotional Intelligence in English Learning Self-Report Test (EILLES). The overall high percentages and mean scores of RQ 1 to RQ 4 (perceptions of emotions, managing own emotions, managing others’ emotions, and utilisation of emotions) reveal that learners’ perceptions of emotional intelligence in English language learning are agreeably positive and deemed as useful and necessary. The implication of the study should encourage educators to incorporate EI training into their ESL teaching and learning practices. Suggestions to future researchers are to selectively sample a balanced number of female and male students to increase the reliability and accuracy of results, to target a bigger sample population, and to explore the educators’ perspective on EI in language learning and investigate other factors/sub-scales of EI in language learning.

Abstract

Abstract
Engagement in meaningful, cognitive, and leisure activities has been shown to influence life satisfaction among older adults. This study examined these relationships in a cross-sectional survey of 134 community-dwelling older adults aged 60 years and above. Instruments included the Engagement in Meaningful Activities Survey (EMAS-12), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS-5), and Cognitive and Leisure Activities Scale (CLAS-16). Based on established scoring, EMAS engagement levels were categorised as low (<30), moderate (30–39), and high (≥40). Results indicated that 59% of participants reported moderate engagement, 26.1% high engagement, and 14.9% low engagement. Mean scores were EMAS 36.1 (SD = 7.44), SWLS 29.28 (SD = 3.77), and CLAS 40.41 (SD = 10.00). Correlation analysis revealed that EMAS was significantly associated with SWLS (r = 0.45, p < 0.001) and CLAS (r = 0.44, p < 0.001), while SWLS was also positively related to CLAS (r = 0.27, p = 0.002). Significant differences in engagement were found based on community activity involvement (p < 0.001), education level (p < 0.001), and occupation type (p < 0.001). A weak but significant negative correlation was observed between EMAS and age (r = –0.29, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that while life satisfaction among older adults was generally high, engagement in meaningful and cognitive-leisure activities was only moderate, highlighting the need for tailored, age-friendly interventions. This study addresses reviewer feedback by clarifying the cut-off points for engagement categories to enhance interpretability of results.

Abstract
Engagement in meaningful activities is associated with better physical and mental health among elderly individuals in the community. Such participation may delay age-related decline, reduce mortality, and minimise the need for long-term care. This study examined the relationship between engagement in meaningful activities and health status among community-dwelling elderly. A total of 134 participants aged 60 years and above completed the Engagement in Meaningful Activities Survey (EMAS-12) and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) using a cross-sectional design. Findings showed a moderate level of engagement, with significant positive correlations for physical health (r = 0.20, p = 0.02) and mental health (r = 0.24, p < 0.01). Group comparisons indicated significant differences in engagement based on education level (F = 11.88, p < 0.001), prior occupation (F = 5.29, p < 0.001), community participation (t = 3.28, p < 0.001), and geographic location (F = 3.67, p = 0.02). Higher engagement was reported among those with tertiary education, professional work backgrounds, active community involvement, and urban residence. In contrast, no significant differences were observed for gender, income, marital status, living arrangement, or ethnicity. Overall, the findings highlight those meaningful activities play a vital role in elderly health, and demographic factors must be considered when designing programmes to promote active ageing and well-being.
